Lombard Service League meeting Oct. 8
The Lombard Police Department will share "Safety Tips for Self Defense" at the next Lombard Service League meeting on Oct. 8. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Prairie Path, 555 Foxworth Blvd., in Lombard. Members and their guests are invited to attend this presentation to learn how to stay safe and to protect themselves. Refreshments and a short business meeting will follow the presentation. Membership in the Lombard Service League is open to anyone who is interested in providing service to Lombard, the surrounding area, plus the statewide and international projects of the Federation. Single mothers support group to meet Oct. 11
All single mothers and their children are invited to a complimentary luncheon with inspiring speakers, lunch for all attendees, free child care (ages 0-12), support, and fellowship with other single mothers. GPS program Oct. 13
On Tuesday, Oct. 13, the GPS Parent Series will host award-winning journalist Jennifer Breheny Wallace in a conversation with Dr. Lisa Damour for a special presentation titled “Mattering: The Tension Between a Never-Enough Mentality, Purpose, and Student Wellbeing” at noon and 7 p.m. via Zoom. In this program, Wallace and Damour will answer the question: How do we help our children strive for excellence without crushing their spirits? Wallace will address youth anxiety, parental burnout, and toxic achievement culture as she expands upon the insights presented in her bestselling book, "Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic and What We Can Do About It." All are welcome to the free weekly GPS events, and no registration is required. The Art of Dying Oct. 15
On Thursday, Oct. 15, visitors are invited to step into the Victorian Cottage, 23 W. Maple St., for “The Art of Dying,” an immersive, first-person theatrical experience exploring Victorian mourning traditions. Guests will learn how Victorians mourned and remembered their loved ones, including funeral customs, mourning attire, and spiritual beliefs. The evening combines history, mystery, and the supernatural for an experience that transports visitors into the past. For those looking to further enhance their evening, tarot readings will be available on-site for an additional fee. 6-9 p.m. Admission: $12 members, $15 non-members. Optional tarot reading: Additional $10, paid separately.
Pumpkin Night Hike for Families Oct. 16-17
On Oct. 16 and 17, bring the family to Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve in Oak Brook between 5:30 and 9 p.m. for a self-guided pumpkin- and lantern-lit hike through the woods. Kids can use their sleuthing skills on a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt and then collect a treat when they’re done. Hikes leave every 15 minutes; the last group leaves at 7:30 p.m., and trails close at 9 p.m. This all-ages hike (under 18 with an adult) is $10 per person for ages 3 and up and free for ages 2 and under. Lombard Garden Club to host Bill Karges Oct. 23
Bill Karges will speak on “Gardening in the 1970s” at the Lombard Garden Club meeting Oct. 23. This presentation features the ever popular and extremely informative Bill Karges who has shared his knowledge with audiences for a number of years. Bill’s informative program will take you back to the 1970s when the establishment of Earth Day ushered in a new era of environmental awareness. We’ll explore the back to nature trends of the 1970s and how they influenced the way we garden today. (1970s attire encouraged). The meeting will be held at the Lombard Community Building, 433 E. St. Charles Road in Lombard. There is no charge and the public is welcome to attend. The club welcomes fellow gardeners who enjoy learning opportunities and the company of others.
