During the Oct. 24 cemetery walk at the historic Lombard Cemetery on Main Street, (left to right) Lombard Historical Society volunteers Kathleen Meyer and Katie Tumavich were on hand to talk about some of the individuals buried in the cemetery, including Alice Claflin Rand (1862-1951), one of the 14 women who followed in attorney Ellen Martin’s footsteps (the first woman known to vote in Illinois) and dared to vote in Lombard on April 6, 1891, due to a technicality. The 19th Amendment was ratified on Aug. 18, 1920 (www.archives.gov). The volunteers said Alice’s mother, Henrietta V. Meader Rand, and aunt, Mary Meader Patterson, were among the group of women voters. Historical society Executive Director Alison Costanzo said the historical society and Lombard Historic Preservation Commission help maintain the (once considered abandoned) cemetery’s upkeep, with help from volunteer groups.
