Once again, local officials are ignoring what is recommended by the Morton Arboretum. They do not recommend “No Mow May” and never have. Call them if you don't believe me. Longer grass promotes extreme weed growth and increases mold and other diseases that are normally exposed to the sun. Also, when you do not mow, you have excessive buildup that actually makes bare spots because it kills your lawn where it is heavy. This far outweighs any benefit for other reasons.

If you read the police report in the May 7 Lombardian, you may have noticed that there were nine DUI arrests in Lombard from April 15-20. First of all, thanks to the Lombard Police Department for arresting impaired drivers and getting them off the roads. Second, isn't it embarrassing that in 2026 so many people are still driving after drinking? Have these people who were arrested heard of Uber or Lyft? Do they have any sober friends who could give them a ride? Third, if nine people were arrested for DUI in Lombard in a six-day period, does anyone else wonder how many other intoxicated drivers were out there who didn't get caught?

I love the Lilac Parade, but shake my head at all the inconsiderate people who put out chairs, blankets, etc., the day before the parade, like privileged so-and-sos. While the parkways are public property, you trample the lawns that the homeowners take care of, and after the parade leave garbage around—and it all looks unsightly and un-neighborly. I also wish the village would bring back the shuttle buses like they used to for the Taste of Lombard, to help ease the parking nightmare on parade day. Same for the July 4 fireworks. The last few years we missed them because there was no place to park within any reasonable distance. I remember they used Hotel/Motel Tax money for the bus service. It was nice when they did the trolleys for the Jingle Bell Jubilee, transporting us from place to place.

To the person who apparently had their feelings hurt (Speak Out, May 7), regarding my comments about the No Kings March published April 30 in Speak Out, saying I was “so wrong” in relating “a bunch of nothing-else-to-do purple haired idiots” participating in this nonsense; well, I too respect their right to participate and waste their God-given time on this Earth engaging in such a squandering use of human resources and solidarity. I just think that their efforts could be much better used to do some real good in our community. Well, maybe I shouldn't have used the word “idiot.” Maybe “fool,” “nitwit” or “moron” would be more appropriate. Take your pick. As the great Forrest Gump would say, “Stupid is as stupid does.”

I have banked with several banks in our area for years. The best service ever was this past week at Lombard Bank, by the Jewel. I was renewing a CD; the young lady helping me was the most helpful and informed banker that I have worked with in years. So glad to have great service at this local bank!

WGN News was at a grade school last week and happened to show kids in a PE class, and they were sitting on those little square “scooters” with the four wheels and riding around the gymnasium. It was so refreshing to see them being used. Sixty-plus years ago we had those in PE class and they were so much fun, like playing dodge ball and other games on them, making the games more challenging. A good old-fashioned way to get exercise. I think today’s schools could use some of the methods of learning that we grew up with, the gym and in the classroom. Wonder if they still have spelling bees or is everything on a tablet? A family member was helping his granddaughter with math and told me he had no clue how they were teaching some simple concepts anymore, that the way we were taught worked just as well, easier and got the same answer!

While Trump fights the terrorists, the Democrats are fighting Trump. The Democrats embrace their far-left radicals who are running the party. If you’re a say-nothing Democrat and keep voting for the Democratic Party, you’re just as guilty of destroying our country. Let Trump do the job he was elected for. Thank you.

Yes, this is Elmhurst calling, and I’m just wondering who was the genius that allowed a Walmart to be built on Route 83? The traffic that this Walmart causes with its stoplight is egregious and ridiculous, and I can only hope that if this Walmart store closes one day, like we see many other big box stores, that they have the insight not to open up a business and get rid of the stoplights.

Some major stores are getting rid of their self-checkout lanes because those lanes are more vulnerable to theft than lanes with cashiers. What a shame. Many of us non-criminals who have never stolen anything won't be able to enjoy the convenience of self-checkout lanes anymore. Anyone who thinks crime isn't a massive problem is delusional.

If Americans took all the time and money spent on protesting, many of the vacant jobs could be filled before the robots in AI take over. Everywhere you go there are vacancies in the staff and a shortage in service. In the days of old, we had parades instead of protests; everyone loves a parade!

Last Friday, May Day, I was watching the news and saw Chuy Garcia and a couple others wanting to raise the minimum wage to $25 an hour. Now let me explain to the Democrats and liberals why that should not be done. If you raise the minimum wage to $25 an hour, people will not go to the store or a fast-food place because they can’t afford it, and if they can’t afford it, the company goes out of business and you have people losing their jobs. If you don’t understand that, look at what's going on in California right now when they raised it to $20 an hour, how many franchises and how many McDonald’s went out of business. It’s not that hard to figure out, but a Democrat or a liberal just doesn't get it. And I was surprised to see Chuy Garcia and the others, the lady from the Chicago Teachers Union, the same thing. And she’s teaching our kids. No wonder why the test scores are low and everybody is leaving Illinois and Chicago. They’re teaching our kids to be stupid. They can’t understand simple math. God Bless America and the stupid.

77-year-old grandmom here. I am addressing the many, many things that the current Trump regime has destroyed as we knew them: health care, veterans services, Social Security, support for the disabled, it’s weakened workers rights, deregulated everything intended to protect the average American, cut education funding, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services, ended food safety inspections, ruined American farms and too much more to list. As for the federal budget as of April, the national debt has increased by $2.8 trillion and taxpayers are now paying nearly $1 trillion annually just to service that debt.

All the sanctuary state governors and all the left-wing communist/socialist judges in our country are Democrats. How many more American citizens need to die because of their Democratic policies and beliefs?
